LtCol Roy B Powell USAF (Retired) passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 22, 2020. He was 100 years old.
Roy is survived by Juanita Powell - his wife of 74 years; his daughters Sandra Jarman, and Brenda Duty; his son Bryan Powell; his grandchildren Andrea Jarman, Nathan Powell, Michael Casagrande, and David Casagrande; and his great-granddaughter Ruby Quinn.
Roy was preceded in death by his son Charles Powell and by his two older brothers and two older sisters.
Roy was born on April 13th, 1920 in Maysville, Oklahoma to Minot and Daisy Powell. He graduated from Bradley High School in 1938. After attending Oklahoma State University for a year, he joined the U.S. Army and was selected for Officer’s Candidate School and then was selected for the Army Air Corps during World War II. He transitioned to the United States Air Force in 1947. Roy saw combat duty as a fighter pilot during the Korean war and was stationed around the world, including Alaska, Korea, the Philippines, and Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City. During his later military career he taught Air Force ROTC at Oklahoma State University and Eastern Oklahoma State College. Roy retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1960.
Roy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana State University in 1951, a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of the Philippines, and a Juris Doctor degree in 1961. Roy practiced law in Oklahoma City, Wilburton Oklahoma, and McAlester Oklahoma, before being appointed as an Assistant District Attorney for Pontotoc County in 1970. Roy was later appointed as District Attorney for Pontotoc, Seminole, and Hughes counties. After leaving office in 1979, he moved to Portales, NM where he farmed and served as an adjunct professor of Business Law at Eastern New Mexico University.
In 1981, Roy returned to prosecutorial law and served as an Assistant District Attorney in Okmulgee County and Harper County until 1986. Upon retirement, he and Juanita returned to their farm in Portales, NM until 2000. In 2000, Roy and Juanita moved back to Oklahoma City to be closer to their family.
