She was born December 9, 1920, in Mannford, OK, to William Hobart and Nora Addie Guinn Gilreath who preceded her in death.

She married Elvin Hoffman on September 19, 1938. He died June 24, 1981.
She married John Higginbotham, Jr. on March 29, 1990. He died May 8, 2013.
Verna is survived by four children; Janice (Jim) Friley of Moore, OK, Richard (Melva) Hoffman of Sanger, TX, Linda (Rick) Wince of Bloomington, IL, and Karen (Bill) Khourie of Elk City, OK; also, 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Gordon Gilreath of Oro Valley, AZ, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce Ann and Randy Anderson; one granddaughter, Melody Reid; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Anderson and Jacee Byers; and two brothers, Junior and Kenneth Gilreath.

Verna’s first husband, Elvin, was a minister with the Assemblies of God denomination and together they pastored churches in Sedan, Dodge City and Galena, KS, for several years. Her later year’s residency was in the Oklahoma City area.

She graduated from Mannford High School, Mannford, OK, in 1938.

Verna was a homemaker and loved to crochet and made many treasured items for her family over the years. She also enjoyed playing Bingo with her nursing home friends, as well as playing games like Scrabble and Dominoes with her grandchildren, watching NASCAR racing, and watching OU girls’ softball, and OU College football.
For the past 3 years, Verna was lovingly cared for at the Elk City Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility in Elk City, OK. She was blessed to have made many friends of staff and residents including her special and loving roommate, Agnes Ward.
Verna was a very loving, extremely kind and gentle woman. Her faith in God was unwavering and she was considered a Prayer Warrior by all of her family and friends. Her conversations usually included, “I’m praying for you.” We all knew that to be true. All of her grandchildren considered her their hero and have all acknowledged their desire to follow her example. She left a truly Godly Heritage.
She will be deeply missed by all.
