Wendolph “Steve” Rance
Wendolph Rance, known to friends as “Steve”, was born on March 12, 1946, in Ozark, AL, and passed away on March 9, 2021, at the age of 74 years. Wendolph moved to Cleveland, OH, in his childhood, of which he thought of as home. He graduated from East Cleveland Tech.
Steve served in the Air Force for 26 years, of which most of his time was spent overseas; Vietnam, Taipei Taiwan, Castle AFB CA, Camp New Amsterdam the Netherlands, George AFB CA, Izmir Turkey, and RAF Bentwaters, UK, where he met his wife, Susan. This was also his last assignment before he retired. He then followed his wife Susan on her assignments.
Steve loved his sports, especially basketball and football, of which he played both while in the Air Force. He also coached basketball and refereed for a while. His friends in the military meant the world to him, as they became like family.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Susan Whitford; daughters, Olethea Merrell (Wes) and Nancy Rance; three grandchildren, Nathan, Jordan, and Gabriella; brother, Ernest Stanford (Verna); several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; several cousins, especially James, Bert, Henry, Gelaine, Anne, Bobbie, Jean, and his Aunt Laverne.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Clemmie and Johnnie; grandparents, Nancy and Clemens; uncles, James and Clarence; brother, Tyrone, and a sister.
